According to the No. Nevada Business Weekly July 30, 2007 issue acticle by Rob Sabo, "Business Builders see growth, expansions" , paragraph 3, "With the US Department of Energy ranking Nevada first in solar resources with 250 sun days per year, and second in production of geothermal power, the state is will posistioned for explosive growth in clean energy resources.  Nevada currently has 15 existing geothermal plants, 13 of which are in Greater Reno-Tahoe. "

This is great news for Reno/Sparks area.  This means we could be on the forfront of business's going "green".

PetSmart & Reno

Thousands of fish from around the world will be raised in PetSmart's new distribution center at the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center.

Petsmart's 900,000 square foot building - equivalent to 16 football fields - is the latest in a line of new companies building or expected to move to the industrial center.

ENERGY PLANT

A Canadian company is looking at Pershing County as potential site for a coal-fired power plant.

The plant would use 10,000 acre-feet of water per year, says County Commissioner Dairn Bloyed, who heard Lorne Bradley, president of Railex Power & Energy Group, present plans to the Pershing County board of commissioners earlier this month.

Railex, based in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, bought a substanial amount of land near the old mining town of Oreana, says Bloyed.

Railex would need to bring a rail spur to Oreana back from the Union Pacific tracks at Interstate 80, he adds, because it would need to deliver up to 140 rail cars of coal at a time.

the company is negotiating with area farmers for water rights, says Bloyed.

"But it's very preliminary.  It could be years down the road."  while the board was initially receptive, he adds, it will want to see the state enviromental impact report before making a decision.

Summertime & Sun

With the full effects of the summer sun shining upon us, it is that time once again for Sun common sense.  Here a few tips on the effects that the sun has on us, regarding heat exhaustion, dehydration, heat stroke and of course sunburn.

To avoid dehydration, drink what's at hand at least every 15 to 20 minutes but remember to say away from decaffeinated beverages.  By the time a person becomes thirsty, dehydration has probably already commerced.

Heat Exhaustion is a condition that results from a lack of sufficient amounts of fluid in the system.  and hot weather is most likely the huge culprit.  When the outside temperature is above 98 degrees- close to the humans body normal body temperature - it is definitely time to take a break from strenuous exercise.  Some of the symptoms of heat exhausting are the following:  dry mouth, lethargy, headache nausea, and sometimes sweating.

Heat stroke is severe dehydration.  Some of the symptoms include: elevated body temp, headache, delirium, major mental status changes.  If you or someone you know seems to have these symptoms, call 911 or go to the emergency room immediately.

The best bet to avoid sunburn is the following, ALWAYS (ALL YEAR ROUND) WEAR SUNSCREEN, avoid staying out of the sun from 10 until 4, wear hats and clothing with tightly woven fabric is best.

Flag Day

On June 14, Americans celebrate the adoption of the first national flag. Also known as the "Stars and Stripes" or "Old Glory," the first American flag was approved by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. In 1818, after 5 more states joined the Union, Congress passed legislation fixing the  number of stripes at 13 and requiring that the number of stars equal the number of states.

Origin and Design

In the British colonies of North America before the Revolution, each of the 13 colonies had its own flag. On Jan. 2, 1776, the first flag of the United States was raised at Cambridge, Mass., by George Washington. Known as the Grand Union flag, it consisted of 13 stripes, alternate red and white, with a blue canton   bearing the crosses of St. George and St. Andrew. On June 14, 1777, Congress enacted a resolution “that the Flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white, that the Union be 13 stars, white in a blue field,  representing a new constellation.” The story of Betsy Ross and the first flag is now somewhat discredited; official records have not confirmed that she was responsible for the  design and making of the first flag.

Congress, on Jan. 13, 1794, with Vermont and Kentucky having been admitted to the Union, added a stripe and a star for each state. Congress in 1818 enacted that the 13 stripes, denoting the 13 original colonies, be restored and a star added to the blue canton, for each state, after its admission to the Union. All of the states and territories of the United States also have their own flags.

FARMERS MARKET

UNEMPLOYMENT

Unemployment in the Reno-Sparks area stood at 4.3 percent in April compared with 4.1 percent a year earlier.  Total employment stood at 216,100 up by 6,400 in the past year.  Unemployment in the Carson City area was 5.1 percent compared with 4.8 percent a year ago. The Elko area posted 3.7 percent unemployement compared with 3.9 percent in April 2006.

Station Casinos

In an SEC filing, Station Casinos values the 92 undeveloped acres it owns across the street from Summit Sierra at $51.5 million to $53.5 million.  A smaller parcel it owns across from the Reno-Sparks Convention Center is worth $8.6 million to $9.3 million, says the company.  It plans a Reno casino a a cost of $700 million with an early 2012 opening.
